The research behind the Method
This page describes the approach the Method takes and the reading research it is built on. It makes no claim about results, because nobody has learned to read with this product yet.
What this page is, and what it is not
LearnWithBee has not been used by a learner. There is no outcome data about this product at all — no study, no measurement, nothing that could be reported as a result. Anything on this page that sounds like evidence is evidence about reading, gathered by other people, and not evidence about this product.
What we can say is what the Method does, which is checkable: the six phases below are the platform’s own definition, and every behaviour named on this site points at the file that performs it. When there is outcome data, it will be published here with its method attached. Until then this page describes an approach.
The five components, and what the app does about each
Phonics
Connecting letters to those sounds. Syllable division is done by phonics rules — vowel teams, digraphs, silent e, compounds — rather than by where a word may be hyphenated.
Fluency
Reading aloud at a natural pace. The reader reads whole sentences and passages into the microphone and the app scores the reading as it is spoken.
Vocabulary
Knowing what the words mean. Words a reader has met are kept in a word bank they can return to, and matching a word to its meaning is one of the activity types.
Comprehension
Following what the text says. Ordering the events of a passage and sorting items by a property are the two forms this takes today.
And the part that is a design choice
Reading research does not say a reader must never see a red X. That is our decision about how it should feel, not a finding we are borrowing.
The Method, in full
Six phases, one loop. This is the platform’s own definition of the Method, quoted exactly.
- LISTEN
- The learner hears the sound, word, or sentence read aloud by the AI. Optional but recommended as the first step for new content.
- OBSERVE
- The text is presented visually with appropriate illustration. The learner sees the shape of the word or sentence.
- PRACTICE
- The learner reads aloud. Azure Speech evaluates. The Bee responds without interrupting mid-flow.
- CORRECT
- At natural pause points, the Bee surfaces specific words or sounds that need work and models them. The Bee models the fix with the platform's sound-out-then-blend method: each syllable spoken in isolation (SSML IPA hints, so "py" is voiced /pi/, not /paɪ/), a beat between, then blended into the whole word at natural speed — the written word splitting into highlighted chunks, then rejoining as it's spoken. One-syllable words are modeled once.
- MASTER
- Repeated practice across multiple activities builds automaticity. Honey and the lesson's mastery cell mark progress.
- APPLY
- The learned skill appears in subsequent contexts — in stories, in functional reading, in comprehension exercises — reinforcing transfer.
